Single Vision Glasses

Ask our opticians

Ask now
Single vision glasses have the same prescription across the entire lens. Here we outline how they compare to multifocal lenses.
Which Glasses Are Best for Single Vision

Single vision glasses are very widely-used glasses. They’re called single vision because there is only one prescription across the lens – as opposed to something like bifocals, where one lens has different areas that allow the wearer to see differently close-up or further away.

What are single vision lenses?

Single vision lenses are the most popular type of prescription lenses. They’re commonly used by near- or far-sighted users and those with astigmatism to help see at a distance of up to 30 feet. They can also be helpful with common daily activities such as reading, using a computer or driving.

If you wear prescription glasses, they most likely have single vision lenses. The statistics also suggest that under-40s are more likely to wear single vision glasses too, as younger people often have only one prescription.

At SmartBuyGlasses, there is an enormous range of low-priced eyewear and designer glasses specifically catered to these types of prescriptions. Click here to find out more.

What does single vision mean?

The term ‘single vision’ is as simple as it sounds. Both of your eyes work the same way – in a single unit, if you will. A prescription for someone with single vision will be the same in both eyes – which makes it really easy to pick up prescription glasses right off the bat.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bifocals were invented by former US President benjamin Franklin, who created them when his single vision lenses were no longer enough to correct his vision.

Does pupillary distance matter with single vision glasses?

Pupillary distance is extremely important when fitting any kind of glasses – including single vision glasses. This is because all lenses are designed to have an optical center which is intended to align precisely with your pupil.

If the measurement is not correct, this optical center will still be in the middle of the lens, but it won’t align with your specific pupil.

Instead, you’ll be looking through a different part of the lens. This can affect your ability to focus correctly which, in turn, can lead to headaches, tired eyes, blurred or double vision, dizziness and nausea.

Single vision vs. progressive lenses

While single vision lenses are designed for one field of vision, progressive lenses are defined as follows:

Progressive lenses correct multiple vision requirements in one piece of glass. Therefore, one pair of glasses can be used for correcting your distance, intermediate, and near sighted requirements.

In real terms, this means the top of the lens is adapted for distance vision, and gradually diminishes in power towards the bottom, which is designed for reading or other “close up” tasks, like checking a price tag or using your smartphone.

When it comes to the aforementioned smartphone usage (with single vision or progressive lenses), studies from institutions like the universities of Houston and Harvard suggest that blue light blocking lenses (such as those from zFORT®) can alleviate some of the eye strain that blue-tinted screen glow can cause.

When combined with a prescription, blue light glasses can be a really effective all-in-one eyewear solution.

Single vision vs. bifocals

Bifocals are glasses with lenses split between two prescriptions – for example, one half will be adjusted for long-range vision, and the other will be adjusted for short-range vision. Bifocals are easy to spot because they have a line dividing the lens in two; progressive lenses are another matter entirely.

They handle this prescription difference more subtly and almost ‘blur’ the line between the two sections of lens. If you’re interested in finding out more, check out this article about the difference between progressive and bifocal lenses.

How much do single vision lenses cost?

At SmartBuyGlasses, single vision lenses are more affordable than ever. With designer frames for great prices, or the incredibly good-value SmartBuy Collection, there has never been a better time to get your hands on a solid pair of glasses.

Whether you want wild style, or sensibility and middle-of-the-road function, our huge glasses range really does have something for everyone.

If you’re interested in picking up a pair of low-cost lenses, try this range from the SmartBuy Collection. Alternatively, there are thousands of pairs of affordable designer glasses, and blue light blocking glasses available now at SmartBuyGlasses.

Seasonal Allergies

Ask our opticians

Seasonal allergies, or "hay fever" often causes eye irritation. Here's how to get some relief.
How to Deal with Seasonal Allergies & Itchy, Puffy Eyes

Seasonal allergies, also known as “hay fever,” are allergies that pop up during certain times of the year, usually due to increased amounts of pollen in the air. Symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, ear congestion, and watery and puffy eyes.

Wearing a pair of glasses while outdoors, eyedrops, and finding contact lens alternatives could help to prevent some of these symptoms.

Best sunglasses for hay fever

Having the right pair of glasses could result in hay fever relief. The best sunglasses that you can wear for hay fever treatment are wrap around glasses frames. This is because the wrap-around lens stops pollen from getting into the eyes from all angles.

Another pair of sunglasses that could help with your hay fever allergy are over-sized frames. Over-sized sunglasses cover more surface area, protecting your eyes from pollen and other particles in the air that cause seasonal allergies.

Finally, you might also want to consider titanium-frames if you suffer from allergies. Titanium is a hypo-allergenic metal that will be more delicate on people with sensitive skin. Learn more about the benefits of titanium frames here.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2021, approximately 81 million people in the U.S. were diagnosed with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever).

What helps contact lens wearers with hay fever?

Sometimes, people may get anti-allergenic eye drops to help protect against seasonal allergies. However, many soft contact lenses don’t allow for this form of hay-fever treatment.

One way to fight this is to consider daily-disposable contact lenses. With daily-disposable lenses you are wearing a fresh pair every day, to ensure no pollen or other harmful substances have remained on your lenses.

Another solution for contact wearers who suffer from hay fever is to switch to prescription sunglasses while outdoors. This will ensure that you are still getting optimal vision while also protecting your eyes from pollen in the air. Read here for more information about prescription sunglasses.

When working or playing sports outdoors

If you have seasonal allergies and work outdoors, especially in the garden, you should consider wearing a pair of safety goggles. Safety goggles are one form of hay-fever treatment that protects your eyes at all angles with a tight seal. Click here to learn more about face shields and safety goggles.

When playing sports outdoors, you should always wear protective sports sunglasses or sports goggles. Sports sunglasses will protect your eyes while outdoors and can also be fit with your prescription to offer optimal vision.

If you suffer from hay fever, always make sure that your sunglasses have a proper UV coating, as sun rays can make symptoms of seasonal allergies worse.

The Sporty Sunglasses Trend

The Sporty Sunglasses Trend

In the world of sports, sunglasses are not just a style choice—they’re essential. The latest in sports eyewear is all about combining style with top-notch performance. It doesn’t matter if you like skiing, cycling or golfing, there are glasses tailored to your needs.

And now, more and more people are adopting these styles for everyday use. Learn how new technologies are revolutionizing eyewear and discover the styles athletes and non athletes alike are rocking, sports sunglasses are here to stay.

Lens technologies for the win

male athlete wearing polarised lenses with skiis on shoulder

When diving into the world of sports sunglasses, you’ll find eyewear geared towards athletic performance. Packed with sleek designs and complex technologies, they’re super flexible solutions that come fitted with the best lens quality and frame quality around.

Polarised lenses improve visual acuity by cutting down on glare in bright and sunny conditions. Not only do they look cool, but they also enhance contrast and make for great eye protection around reflective surfaces.

They are game changers. In fact, these trendy looking lenses make such a statement that they have found their place in everyday wear. This includes using them to help reduce glare while driving or just to improve visual comfort when chilling outside on a nice day.

Sport lenses aren’t just smart though, they’re also tough. Sports are physical activities and things can go wrong. There’s a high risk of breaking your glasses on impact, like when you inevitably fall while skiing.

And we all know things go wrong even when not performing sports. This is why many sunglasses boast anti-scratch lens technology and impact resistance, the best solutions to both the rough and tumble of outdoor activities and the accidents of everyday life.

But the new lens technologies don’t stop here—high contrast and colour enhancement reveals a world of vivid detail, whether it’s the gentle slope on a golf course or a hidden root while trail running.

Lens colours, anti-fog coating and polarisation work together to provide good optics and the best protection available.

All the while, these innovative lenses wrap your eyes to form a shield against UV light, guarding against invisible threats to make sure your time under the sun is both safe and visually stunning.

Sporty styles for active lives

biker wearing wraparound sunglasses

When choosing your new sunglasses and add-ons, remember to consider your specific needs. You know best if you need to reduce glare, see in low light conditions or could benefit from anti-scratch technology, amongst other things.

The wide range of lens and frame customization options guarantee there’s a sporty frame for everyone, regardless of face shape, preference, or activity levels. Check out these performing styles for winners and make the right choice for you.

Wraparound sunglasses

The wraparound style comfortably hugs your face while giving you a wide view and keeping your eyes safe from sun, wind and dust. When you’re on the move, these frames stay put, making them ideal for sports like mountain biking or running.

Often fitted with adjustable temples and adjustable nose pads, these sunglasses come in a wide range of designs that make a statement with their snug fit. And thanks to improvements in the materials and technologies, they are more lightweight than ever.

In fact, they’re so comfortable that they’ve consistently gained popularity and are now part of everyday fashion trends. Heavily featured in movies, music videos and social media, they’ve gained mainstream appeal as a personal expression of style.

Shield sunglasses

Shield glasses and goggles stand out with their designs. A single large lens wraps around the wearer’s face, offering an unobstructed field of view and better protection against air flow.

They’re the go-to for winter sports or cycling glasses, but that’s not all: their retro futuristic feel has recently caught the attention of the more fashion inclined, making them perfect for bold statements in everyday expression.

First popularised by runway models and celebrities, over the years they have consistently expanded their reach beyond the realm of high fashion as a distinctive design that symbolises confidence and a forward-thinking style.

The best sports sunglasses for you

Whether you prefer the bold statement of shield sunglasses or the classy snugness of wraparound styles, we’re sure you’ll find something that’s just right for you.

You deserve the best fit. Make a statement and be a protagonist with a pair of sunglasses built for the win.

Types of Glasses

Glasses can differ in many aspects, such as lens type, function and frame style. This guide will gives you an overview of all the options available so you can choose the perfect pair for your eyes.
Types of Glasses
SUMMARY

The types of glasses are:

– Single vision: They correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. They can be either distance or near vision glasses.

– Bifocal: They provide distance correction at the top and near correction towards the bottom, with a visible line separating the two areas.

– Varifocal: They provide correction for near, intermediate and distance focal points without visible lines.

– Reading: They magnify things to make them bigger.

– Blue light: They filter out blue light emitted from digital screens to reduce digital eye strain.

– Safety: They protect eyes from external factors that may hinder vision.

– Sunglasses: They have tinted lenses that protect the eyes from sunlight.

With various types of glasses, choosing the perfect pair might be overwhelming. This article helps you understand all the different types of glasses, lenses, and frames available. Use this as a starting point to see all the options and find the perfect eyewear.

Types of prescription glasses

Firstly, you need to know if you need an eye prescription for your glasses. Whether it’s for reading, working, or leisure, many people need eyeglasses to help correct their vision and see better. Before shopping for a new pair, make sure your eye prescription is still valid, or visit your optometrist for a check-up.

Our eyesight naturally changes as we age, and sometimes it can change while we are still young. These changes can depend on genetics, illnesses, or a misshaped cornea. For each type of refractive error, there is a pair of prescription glasses to help correct it.

Single vision glasses

Types of Glasses
Types of Glasses

Single Vision glasses are the most common type of glasses. “Single Vision” means that the lenses only have one type of vision correction, so one focal length. They help correct refractive errors such as myopiahyperopia, and astigmatism, but only for either distance or near vision, never both.

DID YOU KNOW?

When choosing a pair of sunglasses, you should always opt for something with UV protection.

Bifocal glasses

Types of Glasses
Types of Glasses

Bifocal glasses have lenses with separate prescription zones for near and far vision. At the top, you’ll have your distance correction, while your near vision correction is towards the bottom.

These lenses have a distinct line between each value which causes an image to jump when the eye moves from a far distance to a near one. An image jump is when  the object appears to jump into view closer than it is when viewing through the near segment.

Progressive glasses

Types of Glasses
Types of Glasses

Unlike bifocals, progressive glasses help correct all focal points without visible lines. Each area transitions from one visual correction to another, allowing smoother vision.

The top of the lens is adapted for distance vision and gradually increases in power into the intermediate prescription, which corrects anything at an arm’s length away. Finally, it increases in power towards the bottom, designed for reading or other “close-up” tasks, like checking a price tag or using your smartphone.

Reading glasses

Reading glasses are a type of single vision lenses, but they do not always require a prescription and are available OTC (over the counter), even at local supermarkets. These do not correct your vision but simply magnify things to make them bigger.

They also do not correct astigmatism or amblyopia (a difference of power between the two eyes), so you can only get them in the same power for both eyes (R+L). Reading glasses help you see things close up, like reading a book or looking at your phone or computer.

The power value of reading glasses can start low (+1) and reach higher prescriptions (+4). There are different types of reading glasses which you can read more about here to choose the best one for you. In any case, we recommend consulting your opticians when experiencing visual discomfort before buying any glasses.

Blue light glasses

Blue light blocking glasses are designed to filter out the blue light rays commonly released from digital screens. The filter on the surface of these lenses blocks out an estimated 65% of blue light rays. This will help prevent eyestrain symptoms caused by blue light that can irritate the eyes.

If you use digital technology for socializing, fun, or work and have noticed changes in your eyes or health, then blue light glasses may be what your eyes need.

Safety glasses

Safety glasses are available to anyone without any prescription and help protect your eyes from external factors that may hinder your vision. Safety goggles are a must if working in an environment surrounded by hazardous elements, but they can also be used in other contexts for work or leisure.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are also glasses that we can use with or without a prescription to see better and protect our eyesight. Similar to prescription glasses, sunglasses can also come with various lenses and filters that work best with specific situations.

If you’re looking for something practical that combines your glasses and sunglasses or don’t like wearing contact lenses, you may want to consider the following:

Types of lenses for glasses

Depending on a person’s eye needs and preferences, different types of lenses work best with prescription glasses.

  • Glass
  • Plastic
  • Polycarbonate
  • Trivex & High trivex

You can also combine many lenses with protective coatings to reduce damage to your eyewear and eyesight. Alongside quality lenses, specific frames are also available for all glasses.

Types of glasses frames

Even frame materials and designs can impact your vision and comfort. Some are heavier than others or even bulkier, while others are more lightweight and look nearly invisible.

Frame types

Types of Glasses
Types of Glasses

There are three main types of glasses frames:

  • Full-rim: Full-rim frames completely outline the lens. They are the most durable frame type.
  • Rimless: Rimless glasses, also known as frameless eyeglasses, are glasses with no frame. The nose bridge connects the lenses, and the temples are directly attached to the lenses. This frame type is the most delicate one.
  • Semi-rimless: Semi-rimless frames cover the top part of the lenses.

Frame materials

Types of Glasses
Types of Glasses

There are four main types of material used for glasses frames:
