For many people, prescription eyewear is an essential part of daily life. High retail prices can keep people from getting the vision correction they need– but it doesn’t have to be this way.

At SmartBuyGlasses, we believe that clear vision should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we strive to make shopping for prescription eyewear easy, convenient and affordable—with little to no out-of-pocket expenses when using vision care.

To get the most out of your buying experience, it’s important to know what your vision care policy covers and how to use your vision care when purchasing prescription eyewear.

Don’t let the cost of eyewear keep you from seeing clearly and comfortably.

What are the benefits of buying glasses online with insurance?

Using your vision care when purchasing prescription eyeglasses online comes with several advantages, including:

  • Convenience: Purchasing prescription glasses online means taking care of your eye health without leaving the comfort of your home.

  • Cost reduction: Take advantage of exclusive online promotions and discounts while maximising your insurance benefits to reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

  • Wider selection: Online retailers offer a vast range of frames, styles, and lens options, giving you more choices than traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

Does my plan include vision care?

Not all vision care plans include vision benefits, and not all vision coverage is the same. Most vision care plans are discount or wellness benefit plans that provide specific benefits and discounts for an annual premium.

Eye exam

Generally, prescription lenses are covered, however, what else is covered depends on your plan.

Blue light glasses may be covered under certain vision care policies, some vision care plans cover prescription sunglasses, and some plans may offer discounts on elective vision correction surgery, such as LASIK and PRK, while others do not.

Always check with your provider directly to learn more about what is covered.

DID YOU KNOW?

There is no uniform vision care policy. Cover can vary, and may not be included by all insurance companies.

How to buy glasses online with vision care

Buying prescription glasses, sunglasses, or contact lenses with vision care can significantly reduce costs.

We do not currently offer direct billing, but you can claim reimbursement using our itemised receipt and your company’s claim form directly after your online purchase.

In just a few easy steps, you can buy prescription eyewear online for the whole family.

  • Check with your insurance company to understand what they cover. To do this, you can log into your insurance portal online or call them directly.

  • Determine and understand the reimbursement process to find out what will be covered. Your provider will commonly have a specific amount they can cover with your plan. When making your purchase, keep this amount in mind to determine whether the entire cost will be covered.

  • Schedule an eye exam if you don’t have a prescription, or if your prescription needs to be updated. Eye exams are necessary to receive your prescription information and pupillary distance.

  • Shop and search through our extensive collections of exclusive and designer brands. Use our Virtual Try-On tool or our face shape guide to find the frames that are perfect for you.

  • Once you have found the best frames and chosen lenses, place your order and download the invoice. Once your order has been shipped, you can download your invoice and prepare to submit it to your insurance company. If you are unsure about which lenses are best for your prescription, feel free to reach out to one of our certified optical experts. They’ll be happy to help.

  • The final step of the process is to submit a claim to your vision insurance provider using your invoice. Follow the directions on your insurance provider’s login page, or call them directly for additional assistance. Reimbursement for glasses typically takes a few weeks.

Can I use vision care to buy sunglasses and contact lenses online?

Vision care can also be used for prescription sunglasses. Before you purchase online, check with your provider to confirm that sunglasses are covered in your plan.

Once purchased, follow the same steps you would if submitting an vision care claim for eyeglasses.

Some vision care providers also offer benefits for purchasing contact lenses online. However, since not all insurance providers offer out-of-network benefits, it is important to check information and your eligibility before buying contact lenses.

If your plan has out-of-network coverage for contact lenses, you can use it for daily, weekly and monthly prescription contact lenses.

After purchasing, file for reimbursement using the same method you would if submitting an insurance claim for eyeglasses.

Ever wondered how eyesight works? Discover how our eyes communicate with our brains so that we can see.
Two faces and eyes side by side

The human eye is one of the most complex organs in the human body, second only to the brain. It comprises over two million working parts, all of which communicate to send signals to our brains.

This fascinating organ enables eyesight, its key sensory function. When the brain receives signals from the eyes, it interprets them to construct our perception of the world, allowing us to navigate our surroundings by producing an image of them.

Eye Anatomy

Cornea

The cornea is the dome shaped transparent part of the eye that refracts light as it enters the eye. Your cornea also helps to direct light as it enters the eyeball. Fluid from the tear ducts lubricates the cornea.

Sclera

The second layer of the outer part of the eye is the sclera. Where the cornea is a clear outer layer, the sclera is the visible white part of the eye that surrounds the iris.

Conjunctiva

The layers that make up the surface of the eye are protected by the eyelids and covered with a clear membrane called the conjunctiva. Our eyelids are also lined with protective conjunctiva.

Aqueous humour

This is fluid that fills the anterior and posterior chamber. The eye drains and reproduces the aqueous humour to regulate the eye’s pressure, helping to maintain the eye’s shape.

Vitreous humour

A common myth is that the eye is firm, which is actually not the case. The eyeball is filled with a clear, gel-like fluid called the vitreous humour. Alongside the aqueous humour, this also helps maintain the eye’s shape.

Iris

The iris is the coloured part of the eye, which is most commonly brown, blue or green. The iris is one of three parts of the middle layer of the eye, and contains the muscles that control the size of your pupil by making it contract and expand.

Eye anatomy infographic

Pupil

The pupil is the black circle inside the iris and is another component of the middle eye. The muscles inside the iris control the size of the pupil to manage how much light enters the eye.

Lens

The lens is the third component of the middle layer of the eye. It focuses the light that enters your eye and directs it to the retina.

Retina

The retina is the innermost layer of light-sensitive cells located at the back of the eye. It converts light into signals that it then transmits these signals to the brain via the optic nerve.

Macula

The macula is instrumental to detailed central vision as it helps us see colour and fine details. As it’s in the centre of the retina, it’s responsible for processing most of what is directly in view.

Peripheral Retina

The peripheral retina is the outermost part of the retina which is responsible for your peripheral vision.

Optic nerve

This is the nerve that connects the retina at the back of the eye to the brain. It carries signals from the eyes to the visual cortex, the part of the brain responsible for sight.

External muscles

Alongside the internal muscles, there are external muscles around the eye that control its movement and position. These muscles also contribute to the eye’s shape.

DID YOU KNOW?

Your eyes are the second most complex organ in the human body, second to the brain.

The Brain-Eye Connection

Although eyes do have a certain aesthetic value, the eye primarily enables eyesight, an essential sensory function.

To do so, eyes capture and process light to create the images we see. Light first enters through the cornea, which helps focus it. The pupil, controlled by the muscles in the iris, regulates light intake by adjusting its size based on brightness levels.

Once inside the eyes, light passes through the lens, which changes shape to refine focus. The lens then directs it onto the retina, which contains rods which detect light and dark, and cones, which enable colour perception and sharp detail.

The image formed on the retina is inverted, but the optic nerve then transmits signals to the visual cortex, which corrects the image. The visual cortex also integrates the input from each eye into a coherent image, creating depth perception.

The above process happens almost instantaneously. As sight is the primary sense through which we experience the world, this elaborate system allows us to map and navigate our surroundings.

Eye anatomy infographic 2

A variety of factors can affect your vision. The eye muscles are constantly making subtle changes to the eye’s shape, directing the focus point so that light lands correctly on the retina.

The focus needs to be exact, and when it isn’t, vision appears blurry; similar to how a picture comes out blurry when a camera lens is out of focus.

Additionally, if the optic nerve is impaired, or if the connection between the eye and brain is not well developed, the signals sent to the brain won’t be interpreted correctly, making it difficult to see.

The process of seeing is clearly a very intricate process, with several connective elements that require perfect execution to achieve perfect vision.

However, if you’re struggling with your vision, you’re certainly not alone. Read further as we explain some of the many eye conditions that can affect your vision.

Eye Conditions

As the eye is such a complex organ, there are various conditions and diseases that can disrupt its proper function. These conditions can be determined by several factors, including genetics, exposure, and a person’s overall health.

Our eyes are composed of various types of tissue, including muscles, nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels. When any of these components become damaged, the eye is unable to properly send signals to the brain’s visual cortex.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are some of the most common issues when it comes to eyes. In fact, your vision may be affected by a light refractive error without you even noticing it.

Refractive errors included three types; nearsightedness, farsightedness, and vision distortions such as astigmatism.

Retinal disorders

Damage to the retina can occur because of genetic or environmental factors. Retinal disorders include holes in the retina, detachment of the retina, diabetes-related retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

Blue eye up close with patch of redness

Corneal disorders

Corneal disorders can be congenital conditions you are born with, or conditions which develop later on in life. Some of the most common corneal disorders include allergies, keratitis, dry eyes, or corneal dystrophies.

Optic nerve conditions

Injury or impairment of the optic nerve can have a significant negative effect on one’s vision as this nerve connects the eye to the brain’s visual cortex.

Some optic nerve conditions you may be familiar with include glaucoma and optic nerve atrophy; both of which reduce the field of vision and can lead to vision loss.

Age-related eye disorders

The severity of age-related eye disorders can range from the loss of near vision, known as presbyopia, to more serious concerns like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Since some age-related eye diseases are severe enough to cause permanent vision loss when not treated properly, it’s important to stay on top of eye health and get regular check-ups.

Eyes are also susceptible to more general illness or injury, including infections like conjunctivitis, injuries and trauma from sport, or even eye cancer, though this is rare.

Woman getting eyes tested

When should I go for a vision test?

You should visit your optical dispenser once every 2 years, or more often if you require specialised care. This is crucial to maintain your eye health and update your prescription as necessary.

It’s also important to protect your eyes to prevent damage. Blue light glasses can help filter out the harmful blue-light emitted by digital devices, making them a great option for those who spend a lot of time at the computer.

Eyes are also highly sensitive to UV rays, so it’s important to wear protective sunglasses with UV protection when exposed to the sun.

If you have any further questions about eye anatomy or health, you can visit our Optical Center for more resources on eye related topics. If you still have doubts, feel free to reach out to one of our certified opticians. They’ll be happy to help.

Brand Spotlight: Michael Kors

Brand Spotlight: Michael Kors

Michael Kors is one of the most celebrated fashion designers, striving to make luxury goods accessible and aspirational.

Founded in 1981, the brand started out as a luxury retailer with iconic accessory designs featuring bags, watches, eyewear and shoes, but has since become a household name known to all.

Michael Kors collections are expertly crafted, with timeless elegance at the forefront of the brand’s identity. Here’s how this iconic brand has made a name for itself in the fashion industry by promoting elegance and simplicity.

The beginning of Michael Kors

Founded by Chief Creative Officer Michael David Kors, the brand was established by Michael after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 1977.

His exposure to the modeling industry at a young age gave him industry knowledge that helped him become the acclaimed womenswear designer he is today.

Michael began his fashion career working in a trendy, up-market fashion boutique in New York City, where he was soon encouraged by Dawn Mello to design his own line.

Starting in the 1980s, the brand consolidated its presence both on runways and on the streets, designing styles loved by celebrities, with supermodel Iman walking in Kors’ first runway show.

Over the years, the business has expanded to include luxury goods for men, women and kids.

Michael Kors glasses

The brand launched its first eyewear collection in 2006 in collaboration with Marchon Eyewear.

Some of its most popular sunglasses since this first collection include the 18K gold plated NYC frames, launched in celebration of the brand’s 40th anniversary, and the iconic Miami sunglasses featuring an oversized metal frame.

Also in 2006, Michael Kors launched its e-commerce website and was awarded the Accessory Council’s 2006 ACE Award for Designer of the Year.

Michael Kors, over the years

As the brand turns 44 in 2025, we reflect on Michael Kors’ undeniable impact on the fashion industry in creating a brand that has redefined luxury goods with their commitment to quality, creativity and innovative manufacturing technology.

Michael Kors was regularly recognised for its innovation, having been awarded the title of ‘New Establishment’ by Vogue in 1986, who called Kors one of the most influential designers of the decade.

More accolades came, such as the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year in 1999

and CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year in 2003. Fast forward to 2010 where Kors was the youngest recipient to ever achieve the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

And if you’re not convinced by the Le Praz, there is a world of options to choose from in Michael Kors’ range.

Another favourite of ours is the Michael Kors MK2227 Big Bend green marble acetate sunglasses with a smokey gradient lens.

The brand has also expanded from sunglasses to eyeglasses, with the clear-framed Michel Kors MK4058 Caracas claiming first place in popularity. Alongside these, another prime candidate is the Michael Kors MK3056 Naxos model.

This minimalist rose gold metal frame is a must-have for anyone looking to join the Michael Kors style revolution.

What makes Michael Kors stand out

Michale Kors is recognised not only for its innovation in technology and design, but for altruistic efforts in giving back to the community. The brand has come a long way from its humble beginnings and is now valued at over $4 billion.

Brand Spotlight: Lacoste

Epitomising sportsmanship and French elegance, Lacoste is a brand worn by tennis players and sports enthusiasts around the globe.

What started with a polo shirt over 90 years ago has grown into a household name—and it’s no surprise, considering the impact Lacoste founded in the world of sportswear.

René Lacoste: the tennis player

René Lacoste was born in France in 1929. Despite being a gifted student, he left the Polytechnic School in Paris to pursue his dream of becoming the best player in the tennis world.

His passion finally led him to win seven Grand Slam titles and become part of the French team that won the Davis Cup in 1927 and 1928.

His impact on the sport is undeniable—Roland Garros, home of the French Open, was inspired by him and his teammates who were later inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

René Lacoste: the inventor

At the time, tennis players wore long sleeve shirts on the court. Seeking more comfort, Lacoste designed his own short-sleeve tennis shirts made from petit piqué cotton, setting the foundation for what would become an iconic fashion staple.

His innovations didn’t stop there. He invented the tennis ball machine, the steel racket and even developed a shock absorber for racket strings. “I’ve been inventing all my life,” he once said.

At just 24 years old, Lacoste retired from professional tennis due to a respiratory illness. But in 1933, he partnered with André Gillier to launch the Lacoste Company, making Lacoste shirts available to the public.

The story behind the crocodile logo

Lacoste’s famous crocodile logo was inspired by a bet. In 1923, before a match in Boston, he made a wager with his team captain—the prize? A crocodile leather suitcase if he won.

Though he lost, his fierce determination caught the attention of the American press, who gave him the nickname “The Crocodile”. He loved it so much that he had a crocodile embroidered onto his tennis gear, designed by Robert George.

Later, the instantly recognisable crocodile logo became the official emblem of the Lacoste brand. This decision made history—Lacoste was the first brand to display a visible logo on the outside of a garment, a trend that continues today.

Lacoste today

René Lacoste passed away in 1996, leaving the company in the hands of his son Bernard Lacoste.

Today, it is led by Michel Lacoste and has grown to include over 1,100 stores worldwide, with a particularly strong presence in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Lacoste continues to collaborate with athletes, celebrities and fashion icons, with each brand ambassador embodying the brand’s fusion of sport and style.

While Lacoste shirts remain a signature piece, the brand now offers a wide range of apparel, footwear, watches and accessories, continuing its tradition of sport-inspired style.

Lacoste eyewear: timeless style meets performance

Lacoste expanded into eyewear in 1978, bringing its signature blend of sport and fashion to glasses and sunglasses. Designed for active lifestyles, Lacoste eyewear is just as stylish off the tennis courts.

man wearing eyeglasses

The collection features classic, full-rim frames in bold colours and versatile shapes, including rectangles, squares and ovals. There are also lightweight, semi-rimless designs for a more refined look.

Many styles incorporate metal accents, contrasting temple arms and unique detailing. If you’re shopping for sunglasses, you can even customise your lens colour.

It’s a well-known fact that all companies start from the ground up—literally so for Jimmy Choo.

This remarkable brand was built on a legacy of craftsmanship. His passion for shoes started with his father, a shoemaker who crafted every pair by hand, passing down his expertise to his son.

By the age of 11, Jimmy Choo had already made his first shoes—a pair of slippers that would help shape the global brand we know today. This dedication to artistry was soon praised by Footwear News, further boosting the brand’s profile.

Choo set up his first workshop in the late 1980s in a converted hospital in London’s East End, quickly earning recognition among fashion editors at publications like British Vogue.

In 1989, Choo’s wife’s niece, Sandra Choi, joined forces with him and took on shoe design duties. By the early 1990s, the brand was catering to the rich and famous, including members of royalty.

In September 1992, the first ready-to-wear Jimmy Choo women’s heels were sold, paving the way for the label’s future success. Fast forward to 1996, and Choo, alongside Tamara Mellon, founded Jimmy Choo Ltd.

Around this time, the first-ever Jimmy Choo store opened, marking the brand’s first boutique.

From the outset, the brand was celebrated for its high-fashion designs and top-tier craftsmanship—a reputation that still stands today.

Jimmy Choo remains one of the most adored names in luxury fashion for its timeless sophistication with a modern edge, bolstered by exquisite accessories to match.

Finally, in 2017, Choo sold his namesake brand to Michael Kors, under the Michael Kors Holdings umbrella. This allowed the label to extend its influence even further.

Introducing eyewear

jimmy choo eyeglasses

As it was already dominating the footwear and handbag niche, Jimmy Choo soon turned its attention to eyewear. In 2011, this new direction resulted in glamorous eyewear collections that perfectly reflect the brand’s luxurious roots.

These frames capture the very essence of Jimmy Choo with sleek silhouettes, premium materials, and a hint of sparkle.

Expect oversized cat-eye frames with gold or silver JC detailing, oval silhouettes with crystal embellishments, studded butterfly shapes, and square glasses with a dusting of glitter—just to name a few.

While some designs make an unapologetically bold statement, they’re balanced by a classic, timeless feel. Jimmy Choo frames may have an edge, but they’re crafted to outlast fleeting trends.

Keeping things functional

As with everything Jimmy Choo creates, quality is front and centre. These glasses are made from Italian acetate, lightweight metals, and sometimes even recycled elements.

This results in frames that are durable, comfortable, and just what you need when investing in a standout pair of glasses. On top of that, the lenses are just as high quality and offer top-tier protection against the sun.

Fashion icons

Much like its shoes, Jimmy Choo eyewear has long captured the hearts of high-profile trendsetters looking for glitz and glamour.

From exclusive getaways to vibrant city streets—even the Staten Island Ferry like Carrie Bradshaw—these shades bring a dose of runway flair to any setting.

If you’re aiming for a star-worthy look yourself, slipping on a pair of ultra-glam Jimmy Choo glasses is the way to go—get ready to shine wherever you are.

A final note

Jimmy Choo eyewear is a natural extension of the brand’s iconic reputation, bolstering its position in the luxury world.

Now it’s your turn: whether you’re strolling through the city or enjoying sun-kissed adventures, a pair of Jimmy Choo frames will help you embrace glitz and glam, just as Jimmy Choo shoes do.

Make a statement—you won’t regret it.

Deciding on a pair of glasses is harder than it seems, so we've put together some tips to help you make the best choice.
choosing glasses

Shopping for new eyeglasses frames can be an overwhelming process; after all, it’s a defining accessory that’s part of your everyday wear.

If you’re looking to buy some glasses but just can’t seem to make your mind up, this guide is for you. We’ll be explaining what to consider when exploring the different frame styles and how to find the ones that will best suit your face and needs.

How to choose glasses based on face shape

Getting the right frames for your face shape is the most important part of buying glasses online. If you’re struggling with choosing glasses, this face shape guide will help clear things up and get you started.

Additionally, when choosing frames make sure to pick a colour that compliments your skin tone. For example, blue frames work well with a cool complexion, while red frames go great with warmer tones.

DID YOU KNOW?

There are four basic face shapes: square, round, oval and heart-shaped. You’ll need to figure out which one you have in order to find the glasses that best complement your features.

Glasses for square faces

Those with square faces have a well-defined face with angular features, such as a wide forehead and a strong jawline, chin and cheekbones. The most prominent feature is often the jawline.

Round glasses or thinner frames are great for contrasting strong features, making them well-suited for those with square face shapes. The curves of these frames help soften the facial features and complement the wearer’s natural look. Aviators or pilot frames are also a good option for those looking for an alternative.

square face

Oval: Oval frames are the perfect accessory for any occasion. These frames balance out sharp angles and give off a naturally stylish look, with minimal effort required. Take it easy and let these glasses do all the work for you.

Round: No matter how big or small your round frames are, they look exactly how you’d imagine they would – chilled and centred.

Pilot: Aviator glasses will always be on-trend. They look best when worn during warmer months and add a touch of cool to any outfit.

Glasses for round faces

The typical facial features of a round face are wide foreheads, full cheeks and rounded chins. The face is generally nearly equal in length and width, so we recommend glasses shapes with strong details and angles to contrast the soft features.

By adding some contrast, a round face will look thinner and longer. This is why we recommend rectangular, butterfly and wayfarer frames.

round face

Frames for my round face shape

Wayfarer: These frames are iconic, instantly recognisable and extremely popular. It’s no exaggeration to say that these are a must-have pair for both men and women.

Butterfly: These are glasses for those who are bolder and like to experiment with styles. The combinations of round and geometric shapes, designs and silhouettes, make this frame shape unique and fashionable.

Rectangle: These are the perfect frames for the quintessential gentleman or businesswoman. If you’re looking to revamp your look, these are a great option.

Glasses for oval faces

Oval face shapes have balanced features and high cheekbones, with a slightly narrower chin than the forehead. A lot of people consider this to be the ideal face shape as it has the most balanced proportions.

People with oval-shaped faces are quite lucky as pretty much any pair of glasses will suit them. However, oversized glasses can detract from the natural balance of these features, so it’s best to stick to narrower frames.

oval face

Frames for my oval face shape

Cat-eye: Cat-eye frames are a great option for those who appreciate old-school glamour. If you love wearing your vintage coats and have a flair for drama, these glasses can enhance your classy vibe.

Round: No matter how big or small your round frames are, they will look cool and centred. If you want your vibe to be calm and collected, this is a great pick for you.

Wayfarer: Wayfarers go just as well with oval face shapes as they do with round faces. If you’re looking for something iconic and recognisable, these are the way to go.

Glasses for heart-shaped faces

A heart-shaped face typically has a broad forehead, a narrow jaw, high cheekbones and a well-defined chin. This face shape resembles a stylised heart as it is widest at the top with narrow angles at the bottom.

When choosing glasses for heart-shaped faces, it’s good to create the illusion of a smaller forehead and a broader chin. This can be achieved by choosing glasses that are wider than the forehead, such as Pilot/Aviator, wraparound, wayfarer, or even geometric frames.

heart face

Frames for my heart-shaped face shape

Pilot: Aviator glasses will always be on-trend. They look best when worn during the summer months and add a touch of cool to any outfit.

Wraparound: Generally known for their sporty and practical look, wraparounds are the perfect glasses to wear when you want your adventurous side to shine. Head off to distant shores or hike up a mountain in these sporty, protective glasses.

Wayfarer: Wayfarers are very versatile frames that go well with many face shapes, heart-shaped faces included. With these, you can rock an iconic look that compliments most outfits.

How to choose glasses based on your way of living

Your eye needs and daily routine are key when determining the perfect pair of glasses.

Whether you need them all day long or for specific activities such as work, reading and time outdoors, your frames should complement your lifestyle–not complicate it.

Consider your eye needs

Frames for higher prescriptions

If you have a strong prescription your lenses will be thicker, both in the case of nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia). To ensure both comfort and aesthetics, opt for frames that can accommodate these lenses without looking bulky.

Full-rimmed frames, especially those made from acetate or thicker plastic materials, are a great choice as they provide better support while concealing the lens edges.

Alternatively, high-index lenses can reduce lens thickness, allowing for more flexibility in frame selection while maintaining a sleek look.

Frames for lower prescriptions

If your prescription is low, you have more freedom in choosing frames. Delicate metal and rimless frames can be a lightweight option for these thinner lenses.

Since lens thickness isn’t a major concern, you can prioritise aesthetics, comfort and personal style without worrying about distortion or excessive weight.

Consider your lifestyle

Frames for active lifestyles

Whether you play sports or are always on the go, you’ll need frames that can keep up with your active lifestyle. Consider sturdier frame materials that can withstand impact and resist bending. Wraparounds are a classic and sports frames built for your activity of preference can offer additional benefits.

Here, lens coatings and add-ons can be an excellent investment.

sporting glasses

Anti-scratch coatings help prevent damage from frequent handling, while photochromic lenses adjust to different lighting conditions, eliminating the need to switch between prescription and sunglasses when transitioning from indoors to outdoors.

Polarisation can also be crucial, especially when spending time under bright natural light near reflective surfaces, such as water and snow.

Frames for readers

If you primarily wear glasses for reading, comfort and quality should be your top priorities.

Progressive lenses are a fantastic option for those who need both near and distance vision correction, as they eliminate the need to switch between reading and regular glasses. For those who only need close-up vision correction, single-vision reading glasses provide a simple yet effective solution.

reading glasses

Alternatively, ready readers are an excellent option for those who don’t need much vision correction at all. These are pre-magnified glasses with equal magnification power in both lenses to provide a more comfortable reading experience.

When choosing your frames, opt for lightweight materials such as acetate or thin metal, which ensure comfort during long reading sessions. A wider lens area can also help reduce the need to constantly adjust your head position while reading.

Frames for digital users

If you spend long hours in front of a screen, you should know that blue light exposure can cause eye strain, headaches and disrupted sleep patterns. Luckily, blue light-blocking glasses can help filter out this light and reduce these effects.

These glasses come in both prescription and non-prescription options, making them suitable for anyone who works at a computer, uses a smartphone frequently, or enjoys gaming.

In addition, occupational lenses–also known as computer progressives–can be a great addition to your routine if you spend a good part of your day in front of the computer.

Designed to correct vision at near and intermediate distance, they are great for people who are constantly switching between close-up and intermediate vision tasks, but don’t need distance correction.

digital screen glasses

These can help reduce eye strain. They also help eliminate the neck pain that can result from tilting your head upwards for extended periods of time to view a screen at intermediate distance with regular progressives.

When choosing frames for digital use, opt for a lightweight and comfortable fit, especially if they will be worn for extended periods. Large, rectangular frames offer a wider field of vision, making them a great option.

Coatings are also important for digital users: don’t forget to get an anti-reflective coating to reduce screen glare and a blue light blocking coating for optimal protection.

What to keep in mind when choosing glasses

When choosing your next pair of glasses, prioritise comfort, proper fit and functionality. They should be the right glasses for your face shape, in a colour that compliments your skin tone.

Make sure they feel good on your face, don’t pinch your nose or temples and stay in place while you go about your day. A well-fitting frame goes a long way in improving your quality of life and ensures your lenses align correctly with your eyes, providing optimal vision correction.

Functionality is also crucial. Consider your daily activities and vision needs–whether you need sturdy frames for an active lifestyle, lightweight options for long reading sessions, or blue light-blocking lenses for heavy screen-use. The right pair of glasses will improve your routine, not hinder it.

Ultimately, striking a balance between comfort, durability and aesthetics will ensure you get a pair that looks great and feels even better.

And if you need any extra help figuring out what frames are right for you, feel free to reach out to our opticians. They’re here to help you understand the best match for your lifestyle and vision needs.

Stay proactive about your eye health by learning more about vision conditions and diseases, from common symptoms to potential treatments.
Lady getting her eye checked

Eye and vision problems affect a large portion of the world’s population.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 2.2 billion people worldwide experience some form of eye condition, from mild refractive errors to severe diseases that lead to blindness.

While some vision impairments like mild nearsightedness can be easily managed, others, like glaucoma, require early detection and treatment to preserve vision.

Understanding these conditions is essential for preserving eye health and preventing long-term damage. That’s why we’re going to explore what different vision conditions are, how to treat them and how to stay proactive about eye care.

What are refractive errors?

Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina, resulting in impaired vision. They are the most common vision problems and are usually corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

Illustration of what eyeballs with refractive errors look like

Myopia: Also known as nearsightedness, myopia causes difficulty seeing distant objects clearly while near objects remain in focus. It occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the cornea is overly curved.

Hyperopia: Also known as farsightedness, people with hyperopia struggle to see nearby objects clearly, while distant objects appear sharper. This happens when the eyeball is too short or the cornea has insufficient curvature.

Astigmatism: Individuals with astigmatism experience blurry or distorted vision at all distances due to an irregularly shaped cornea or lens.

Presbyopia: Presbyopia is an age-related condition where the eye loses its ability to focus on nearby objects. This condition generally starts to develop around age 40.

Refractive errors vs. eye diseases

While refractive errors are primarily caused by irregularities of the eye structure, eye diseases often result from damage or degeneration of the eye’s components.

Refractive errors vs common eye diseases

Refractive errors can usually be corrected with lenses or laser surgery. In contrast, eye diseases often require medical treatment and can have more serious implications in both the short and long term.

Common eye diseases

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the macula, which is the central part of the retina that allows us to see fine details.

AMD affects the way the macula sends images to the brain, preventing individuals from properly reading the images that their eyes see.

Some common symptoms include distorted central vision and difficulty reading and recognising faces.

AMD is more common in older individuals and many may not experience the symptoms until the disease progresses. It affects around 10 million people in the United States, making it the leading cause of vision loss among older adults

Cataracts

A healthy lens is a clear and flexible structure that functions similarly to a camera lens. Light passes through it to the retina, which processes the images.

Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the eye’s lens, interfering with this process. These cloudy patches are caused by the deterioration of the lens’ proteins and result in cloudy or blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night and sensitivity to light.

image of eye with cataracts

Cataracts often form slowly. In some cases, they remain small and don’t affect sight altogether. However, when they do progress, surgery is the most effective treatment.

Often an age-related eye disease, it is estimated that over 20 million Americans over the age of 40 have cataracts in one or both eyes and it also represents the leading cause of vision loss worldwide.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma refers to multiple eye diseases related to increased eye pressure. These diseases damage the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss and blindness.

Several factors, including eye injury, blockage of blood vessels and inflammatory disorders in the eye, can cause glaucoma diseases.

Because many people may not experience early symptoms or pain, it’s important to have regular eye exams. Potential vision loss can be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment, usually through prescription eye drops and surgery.

Less common than the previous diseases, glaucoma affects around 3 million Americans.

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that causes changes to the retina, the part of the eye that contains blood vessels and processes light into images. This condition causes the blood vessels to leak fluid, swell, or bleed.

Diabetic retinopathy can potentially lead to permanent vision loss. However, if treated early, its progression can be stopped before permanent damage and scarring of the retina occur.

Symptoms include floaters, blurry vision and dark spots. It affects over 7 million Americans and anyone with diabetes can develop it.

Retinal detachment

Retinal detachment happens when the retina pulls away from its supporting tissues, often due to eye injury or extreme nearsightedness.

Some symptoms include the sudden appearance of floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow over vision.

Although rare, retinal detachment is severe and should immediately be treated with eye surgery or laser treatment to prevent further damage. It occurs in about 1 in 10,000 Americans annually.

Eye alignment conditions

As the name suggests, these conditions relate to eye alignment.

One is strabismus, which is a misalignment of the eyes that causes them to point in different directions. This condition is more common in children, although it can also develop in adults due to nerve damage or trauma.

Child with one covered eye

Another is Amblyopia (also known as ‘lazy eye’), which results in reduced vision in only one eye due to improper development during childhood. It is more common in young children, especially those with untreated strabismus or significant refractive errors.

Rare eye diseases

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is described as the progressive thinning of the cornea, causing it to bulge into a cone shape. This condition causes affected individuals to experience blurry vision, light sensitivity and difficulty with night vision.

Uveitis

Uveitis refers to multiple diseases caused by the inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye that contains the most significant concentration of blood vessels.

Symptoms commonly include blurred vision, eye pain, eye redness and light sensitivity.

People of all ages can develop these diseases, and while they are often treatable, they can also lead to tissue damage in the eye and vision loss. That’s why staying on top of your eye health and getting timely treatment when symptoms occur is very important.

DID YOU KNOW?

The human eye can distinguish approximately 10 million colors, but some people with a rare condition called tetrachromacy can perceive even more.

Preventing and managing eye conditions

Maintaining good eye health requires being proactive. Some ways to stay on top of your eye health include:

  • Having regular eye exams to detect problems early;
  • Using sunglasses to protect the eyes from harmful  UV rays;
  • Seeking advice from eye specialists whenever symptoms occur;
  • Maintaining healthy habits such as following the 20-20-20 rule.

Protect your vision

Understanding vision conditions and eye diseases is essential for preserving eyesight.

By prioritising prevention, early detection and treatment, you can safeguard your vision and maintain a better quality of life. If you have additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our opticians for any clarifications.

Remember, your eyes are as unique as your fingerprints—take care of them!
